My Trip to the Grocery store Essays - Sales, Trade, Marketing

My Trip to the Grocery store Amy LeBron Intro to Nutrition Discussion #2 9-4-17 During my weekly trip to the grocery store I took a mental note on what this topic is asking us to write about. Where the most expensive items (per serving) are in the Grocery Store. The most expensive and way over priced items that I found tend to be located among the meats, seasonings, dairy and fresh produce/out of season produce. I never even paid attention to any of this until now but they all seemed to be laid out along the side and back walls of the store. Intrigued I reached for my phone to google the whole "grocery store set up". After doing a little research, I found that stores typically place foods, such as milk eggs, cheese and meats, furthest out of reach to draw shoppers to the more convenient (and unhealthier) item such as canned goods, end cap specials, and sale items in the center of the store. The store not only looks pretty and clean but everything is placed exactly where they can get the most money out of the shoppers. Candy isles, beer, chips, canned spaghetti, soda pop, grab and go items are all right there in the middle with the easiest of access. All the healthier and non-processed items are in the back. Oh, and don't forget the super nic e retired lady handing out free samples of fresh brownies and hot cobbler on your way to the chicken breast. Another thing I learned, is that there is such a thing called the "Bulls-eye Zone". This area is where the higher priced items with the highest markup tend to be placed and that the manufacturers pay good money to have and keep these brands eye level. What difference can I make on my diet based on these observations? Well, after learning about where and why things are placed in the grocery store, it has opened my eyes to our mass majority of obesity in the nation, but that's a whole different topic. I will eat before shopping, make a shopping list and stick to it and maybe even bring a friend who hates shopping to get me out of the store quicker. Very good reading and very educational learning experience!! Have a wonderful week!
